Permaculture land-project and education space, looking to become an ecoaldea in 2018

Boodaville is an environmental education / permaculture project run by teacher and activist Anna Gurney in the Matarranya region of Spain. 2.5 hours from Barcelona, near Calaceite town.

The project is a collaboration between Anna herself and any permaculture teachers, volunteers, friends and travellers who are interested in getting involved. Over the years the main house, outdoor kitchen and campsite facilities have been built and many people have participated in courses, workshops and retreats. Anna now has a two-year old daughter so there are increasingly activities designed for families too!

immediate objectives:

develop the site according to a permaculture design and finish the small house for guests.
promote permaculture and activism through practical projects and courses.
long-term plan:

live on site as a small eco-community
offer environmentally and socially conscious holidays that lead to guests making permanent positive changes to the way they live. (to generate income allowing a Boodaville cooperative to sustain itself financially)
continue to promote permaculture and activism through practical projects and courses.
we are open to any ideas from brilliant people who need space for conferences/workshops/courses…

the boodaville association:

this is the legal entity behind the educational work we do. Anna Gurney is president of the association, which runs projects at Boodaville and around Catalunya, Spain and sometimes further, to teach and raise awareness about permaculture, environmental and social issues. the statutes of the association, stating the objectives and legal structure can be read on the blog

the land:

1.5 hectares of olive terraces and two piney hillsides at the bottom of the Vall Rovira, Matarranya, Spain. two nearly finished buildings, no mains water, not much electricity – just trees and nightingales.

the yurt:

in 2009 we built a yurt with only the help of a 12 page leaflet downloaded from the internet. Sadly the yurt has come to the end of it’s existence. but we have a stone house instead! and the yurt building process was hugely important in the development of the whole project.

the building plan:

the medium-term plan is two main buildings- one for guests including bar/conference/dining/workshop area, some sleeping rooms and bathrooms – the other more like a house with warmth, kitchen, bedroom type areas and a terrace. the architects presentation has detailed drawings and technical information about the project if you want to know more. due to tardy administration processes the guest building is still to be approved. in sept 2012 i started work on the house. recent pictures of the house

the permaculture:

all buildings and projects will be undertaken following strict sustainability criteria and permaculture principles.

the general permaculture design is being done in close collaboration with Alessandro Ardovini, a qualified permaculture teacher who is working towards his diploma. read more about the design on the blog

the buildings are bio-construction as far as possible, with integrated design techniques. recycled materials, locally sourced and sustainble materials are used. for the stages of the work where planning laws dictate that our radical ideas are not acceptable we will look for the most eco-friendly of the viable options (eg. we have to have a septic tank by law so we either change the law or calculate the ecological footprint of the different viable options and choose the best one).
